The Boy Who Could Not Walk
The epic of Sundiata — West Africa’s greatest oral tradition — tells of a prince of Manding born unable to walk. When invaders seized his homeland, he rose, walked, and united the Mandinka clans.
Kirina, 1235
At the Battle of Kirina, Sundiata’s forces broke the Sosso king Sumanguru. The battle is remembered as the founding act of the Mali Empire — and griots still perform its songs today.
The Foundation
From his capital Niani, Sundiata built the state whose gold, scholarship and pilgrimage would dazzle the world — the empire his nephew Mansa Musa inherited and made legendary.
