Real photographs, not reconstructions. Every country profile leads with genuine historical photographs from public-domain archives — the Library of Congress, Wikimedia Commons, colonial-era photographic collections and national archives. They are grainy, damaged and imperfect; that is what historical evidence looks like, and it is more trustworthy than any modern illustration. Each photograph carries its full attribution and licence, and every page links you to the archives so you can check us.
Why this archive matters. Most people can name an empire or a hero — few can say what happened in their own country, in order, with sources. Egypt is in Africa; Ethiopia was never colonised; Benin abolished its monarchy under French guns in 1894; Benin the country elected a new president in April 2026. This is the map of that. Where historians disagree we say so, and every page links to the archives behind it.
